Stream Clips for TikTok, Shorts and Reels: Guide

In short: a long stream almost never gets shared in full; what travels is the 15 to 60 seconds when something happened. To turn those into short video you need three things: spot the moment, convert it to vertical (9:16) and post it with a strong start. Twitch already generates a horizontal and a vertical clip every time someone clips, and YouTube accepts Shorts of up to 3 minutes. Here’s the process step by step, the most common mistakes and what to do if you don’t have time to edit.

Clip and highlight: what each one is

  • Clip: a short snippet cut from the stream. On Twitch, anyone in your community can create one, depending on your channel settings.
  • Highlight: a selected, polished moment, ready to post: trimmed, with good vertical framing and, if needed, with captions and your channel’s graphics.

Clips give you raw material; the highlight is the final product that gets posted on TikTok, YouTube Shorts or Instagram Reels.

Step 1: spot the moments

The clips that work tend to be of these kinds:

  • Strong reactions (surprise, laughter, rage, hype).
  • Plays or achievements that are hard to pull off.
  • Funny lines or replies to your chat.
  • Community moments: a raid, a goal reached, a gift of subscriptions.
  • Short, useful explanations (a trick, a strategy).

While you stream, note the time of the good moments or clip them right away. It’s easier to cut a 30-second clip on the spot than to hunt for it later in a five-hour VOD.

Step 2: create the clip on Twitch

According to the official Twitch help page on clips:

  1. Click the clip icon on the live stream or a past broadcast to open the clip creator.
  2. Adjust the length with the slider: the maximum is 60 seconds.
  3. Review the crop suggestion, which tries to keep your camera and your game in frame. You can accept it, adjust it, or discard it and choose any aspect ratio between 16:9 and 9:16.
  4. Give it a title and publish it.

Every time a clip is created, Twitch also generates a vertical version alongside the horizontal one. For the vertical there are two layouts: Stacked, which splits the screen into two boxes (ideal if you show camera and game), and Full, which uses a single one.

From the Clips Manager in the Creator Dashboard you can re-edit the title, the crop and the vertical layout, and download the horizontal or the vertical version. If you see you only have the horizontal, it’s because the vertical hasn’t been created yet: edit the layout, save and wait a minute for it to generate.

Step 3: go vertical without losing what matters

Streams are horizontal (16:9) and short videos are vertical (9:16). When you crop:

  • Keep the main action in the center. If there’s a camera and a game, the stacked layout lets you see both.
  • Watch the edges. The interfaces of TikTok, Reels and Shorts overlay buttons and text at the bottom and the sides.
  • If your overlay has frames or alerts, test it first: some crops cut right where your logo is. This is solved by designing overlays with the vertical crop in mind (overlay guide).

Step 4: edit for retention

You don’t need complex editing. What adds the most:

  1. An immediate start. Begin at the moment of interest, not at the “okay, let’s see what happens.”
  2. Captions. Lots of people watch short videos without sound.
  3. A clean ending. Cut right when the reaction or the joke ends.
  4. Your brand visible, without taking over. Your channel’s logo and colors in a corner or a small detail help people recognize you (branding guide).
  5. One message per video. If it has three jokes, those are three videos.

Step 5: post on each platform

YouTube Shorts

According to YouTube’s help, Shorts can run up to 3 minutes and must be square or vertical. You upload them from YouTube Studio (up to 15 at a time, with the pending draft completed before publishing) or from the app, at a maximum of 1080p. Two useful details:

  • A Short longer than 1 minute with a copyright claim of any kind is blocked globally on YouTube. If you use music, use YouTube’s audio library or music you have permission for.
  • Shorts views count toward eligibility for the YouTube Partner Program. We cover it in the platform comparison.

TikTok and Instagram Reels

Twitch lets you post clips from your channel directly to TikTok, Instagram, YouTube Shorts and Snapchat from the Share menu, with a pre-filled title and description you can change. You decide in your channel settings whether they can be exported to socials. You can also download the vertical file and upload it by hand.

Social platforms change their requirements often, so check the current length and format conditions inside each app before uploading.

Kick

Kick has Bounties, which according to its help are short-form content opportunities in which Kick or brands pay streamers for clips. The amount is set by each campaign. Check the details in your dashboard and in the revenue split help page.

How often to post

There’s no magic number; what works is consistency. Set a frequency you can keep up (for example, a couple of videos a week) and keep a recognizable format: the same caption style, the same colors, the same structure. If you want to post daily but don’t have time to edit, that’s where delegating makes sense.

Common mistakes

  • Uploading the horizontal clip as is, with black bars above and below.
  • Starting with 10 seconds of nothing.
  • Using copyrighted music and having the video blocked.
  • Posting on every platform in a different style, with no identity.
  • Not checking how the app’s interface sits over your captions.
  • Clipping everything and posting nothing: the value is in choosing and posting.
